I'm a procurement manager at a 40-person rubber and plastics fabricator. I've managed roughly $180,000 a year in MRO and PPE spending for six years, and I've tracked every order in our cost system. This is not a materials engineering guide. It's a buyer's FAQ. What does Honeywell actually offer for rubber and plastics operations?
Most people in our shop know Honeywell for thermostats. But from a purchasing standpoint, the Honeywell products I spend the most time on are personal protective equipment and performance additives. On the PPE side, that includes nitrile gloves, industrial rubber boots, and specialized hand protection. On the additives side, Honeywell's A-C waxes - including AC-8 and 617A - are used in PVC and polyethylene compounds to modify flow and lubrication.
In my opinion, having Honeywell products across operator protection and process materials is an advantage. We get one vendor's documentation and one set of compliance standards. But it only works if you buy the right product for the right task.
What are Honeywell Teflon gloves, and when do I need them?
Search 'Honeywell Teflon gloves' and you'll find gloves that use PTFE/Teflon-based technology for heat, flame, or chemical exposure that regular nitrile cannot handle. In a rubber and plastics plant, that usually means operators near hot platens, heat sealing, or aggressive solvent cleanup.
Nitrile is still our workhorse for routine chemical handling. Teflon gloves are not daily drivers. In the last three years, I've ordered them for two specific jobs, and both times the deciding factor was the chemical and temperature ratings on the test report, not the brand name.
Ask for the EN 388 or ANSI/ISEA 105 report before you buy. OSHA's hand protection standard (29 CFR 1910.138) also requires a selection process based on the task and chemicals. If a distributor cannot produce a test report, that's a red flag. I only believe this after we ordered a 'premium' glove because a contractor asked for it. The heat rating was much lower than promised. The reorder fixed the safety issue, but the schedule miss was bad.
What should I check before ordering rubber strip?
Rubber strip seems simple until you get the wrong one. For gaskets, seals, or vibration isolation, you need three things: durometer, temperature range, and compression set. The question isn't 'how much per foot?' It's 'will it hold its shape under actual service conditions?'
Use ASTM D2000 and SAE J200 classifications when you can. A supplier that cannot map their rubber strip to one of those line callouts should be a warning. In Q3 2024, my team compared quotes from four suppliers. The lowest price was 22 percent cheaper than the highest, but the product had no ASTM designation. We passed. Six months later, a colleague who bought from the low bidder found the rubber compressed flat in a hot-gas seal line. That's a hidden cost that never shows up on a quote.
Is sheet polyethylene the same as construction plastic sheeting?
No, and I wish more buyers caught this before ordering. Hardware store plastic sheeting is usually low-density polyethylene film. Industrial sheet polyethylene can be LDPE, LLDPE, MDPE, or HDPE, and it comes as sheet stock, not only roll film. The difference is density, tensile strength, and UV protection.
I'm not a materials engineer, so I can't speak to every polymer crystallinity question. From a purchasing perspective, the 'plastic vs polyethylene' distinction matters because a generic 'plastic sheet' spec gives you no negotiating power. If you need sheet polyethylene for a chemical containment line, you'd better know the thickness, density, and whether UV stabilizer is required. UV-stabilized sheet costs more. Non-stabilized sheet costs more later.
For film and sheet products, ask for a specification based on ASTM D2103 or a comparable standard. It's better than saying 'just send the 40-mil,' because 40-mil in LDPE is not the same as 40-mil in HDPE.
How is polyethylene different from other plastics?
Polyethylene is a plastic, but it is not 'plastic' in the generic sense. The word plastic covers PVC, nylon, PTFE, ABS, polycarbonate - thousands of materials. Polyethylene is a polymer of ethylene, and its common variants are LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, and UHMWPE.
When someone asks 'plastic vs polyethylene,' they usually mean 'I need a durable sheet material - is polyethylene good enough?' My answer: polyethylene is often a good choice for impact, moisture, and chemical resistance. It is not a good choice for high heat applications. That's where PTFE or other materials come in.
What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. More suppliers now publish full material data sheets online, so there is no excuse for buying mystery plastic. But the fundamentals haven't changed: match the polymer to the service temperature, chemical exposure, and mechanical load.
Can one supplier cover PPE, rubber strip, and sheet polyethylene?
Consolidating vendors feels like a cost-saving move, and sometimes it is. But I've learned to separate 'one stop shop' from 'one actual solution.' We buy Honeywell PPE because the product specs line up with our risk assessment. We buy rubber strip and polyethylene sheet from specialty suppliers who can quote to ASTM standards.
From a cost control point of view, the visible price is only a starting point. Add freight minimums, minimum order quantities, lead time, and the cost of a failed part. That's your total landed cost. A rubber strip that is $0.20 cheaper per foot but fails after two months is not cheaper.
Cheaper per foot is not the same as cheaper per year. A lesson learned the hard way.
What should procurement teams watch for in 2025?
I'm not a compliance expert, so I'll stay in my lane. The biggest change I've seen in our sourcing process is traceability. Five years ago, we accepted a paper spec sheet after one phone call. Now we check digital portals, download current test reports, and keep them in our own files. That shift is good, but it means more work for the buyer.
The Honeywell products we order now come with more detailed documentation than they did when I started. Teflon gloves, rubber strip, sheet polyethylene - they all require verification.
