The Short Version: Read the Manual Before You Order
If you are buying Honeywell products by product name alone, you're leaving too much to chance. I've made that mistake. In September 2022, I approved a $3,200 order of 'rubber air hose' for our plant. It looked right. It was the wrong durometer for the fittings. That's why I now treat a Honeywell product manual as part of the purchase order, not as paperwork to skip.
The question isn't TPU vs rubber. It's what the manual says about pressure, temperature, and chemical compatibility. Get those specs wrong, and even a good product fails.
Why I Get to Say This
I've handled industrial supply orders for eight years (since 2017). I've personally made and documented seven significant mistakes, totaling roughly $18,500 in wasted budget. In 2017, I ordered the wrong polyethylene wax because I didn't check the melt point. In 2022, the air hose disaster. In Q1 2024, I nearly reordered the wrong nitrile aprons and caught it during pre-check. Now I maintain our team's pre-order checklist.

What a Honeywell Product Manual Tells You
Honeywell products are broad: industrial polyethylene waxes, PTFE, nitrile gloves and aprons, rubber boots, and industrial air hoses. According to Honeywell's product support pages (honeywell.com, accessed March 2025), each industrial product line has a technical data sheet or user manual. I have learned to treat that document as the source of truth. The sales page is not the manual.
Why does this matter? Because I managed to specify a rubber air hose with a working pressure below what our compressor delivered. The hose didn't burst immediately. It degraded, and the failure was slow. (Note to self: check pressure rating against compressor output, not against what the hose 'looks like' it can handle.)
The order was for 100 feet of 3/8-inch rubber air hose. The product page said 'rubber'. The manual listed a working pressure of 150 psi. Our compressor was set to 160 psi. I was checking the wrong column: I looked at 'burst pressure' and thought we had plenty of margin. That number was for the hose's failure point, not its safe continuous rating. The line worked for months. Then it failed at the fitting. That error cost the replacement material, two days of downtime, and a service call.
Nitrile Aprons: The Spec That Saved Us Money
Nitrile aprons are a good example. I used to think 'nitrile' was enough. Then, in Q1 2024, I was about to order a batch for our chemical handling station. The word 'nitrile' was on the page. But the manual showed the apron's coating thickness and chemical resistance table. The cheaper alternative had less chemical resistance to the specific solvents we use. The cost difference was small; the contamination risk wasn't. So glad I double-checked. One click away from ordering the wrong ones.
The surprise wasn't that the expensive apron was better. It was that the spec sheet was the only place where the difference existed. From the product photos, they looked identical.
Vintage Air Hose: A Restoration Trap
A 'vintage air hose' sounds like a restoration product. It's rubber, it's flexible, it has the old-style braided cover. But current safety expectations are not the same as in 1965. If you're using a vintage-style hose with modern compressed air, pay attention to the pressure rating on the replacement's manual. If you need the vintage look, you can still use a modern hose with a vintage-style jacket. That's a product detail, not a style detail.
To be clear, I'm not saying never buy a vintage-style hose. I'm saying don't buy a hose without a current spec. A restored machine with a 70-year-old hose is a leak waiting to happen. If the original hose has no markings, you don't know the rating. Replace it with a modern hose that gives you numbers.
TPU vs Rubber: Stop Asking Which Is Better
The most common question I get is 'TPU vs rubber' for air hoses. When I first started, I assumed TPU was the upgrade: tougher, lighter, more abrasion-resistant. In one application, that was true. In another, it was wrong.
We had a hose failure on a compressor line. The rubber hose cracked after eighteen months. I replaced it with a TPU hose because TPU is 'stronger'. The TPU hose failed faster. The problem turned out to be heat and ozone. Our rubber hose was actually the better choice for that environment; it was just the wrong grade of rubber.
When I compared the two hoses side by side, I finally understood: material names are categories, not specs. There are dozens of polyurethane formulations and dozens of rubber compounds. The manual tells you which one you are actually buying. TPU has excellent abrasion resistance and low-temperature flexibility. Rubber (especially EPDM) handles heat, ozone, and weather exposure better in many cases. To be fair, each has a place. The question isn't 'TPU vs rubber' in the abstract. It's 'what does the application demand?'
Short version: don't upgrade your material before you read the manual. The existing material may be the problem. Or the spec may be.
What I Check Now
Before I order any Honeywell product (or equivalent, if Honeywell isn't the right fit), I check:
- The exact model number and revision of the manual. Manuals change (as of March 2025, some Honeywell support pages have been reorganized, so verify the current one).
- The mechanical ratings, not just the material name. Pressure and temperature matter.
- The chemical resistance table, if the product contacts fluids.
- The 'intended use' section, because there is always one specific sentence that would have saved me money.
If you can't find the manual, ask the distributor for the technical data sheet. If they can't provide it, that's a red flag. It means the person selling you the product doesn't know enough to help you avoid my mistakes.
Old Rules, New Specs
What was true for rubber hose in 2019 may not be true in 2025. Honeywell products evolve. But the fundamentals haven't changed: you match the product to the job, and you verify it before you buy. The old manuals made you read; the new ones just have better PDFs.
Granted, you don't need to read every manual cover to cover. I don't. But I do check the spec tables. That's it. One page can save you a $3,200 mistake.
